Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain homogeneous molten glass by alternately protruding a plurality of rodlike cooling members from both side walls of the adjusting zone of a glass kiln in the lateral direction of the kiln to efficiently cool a large quantity of molten glass. CONSTITUTION:Starting material glass charged into glass kiln 1 from charge inlet 2 is melted in melting zone 2 and allowed to flow into adjusting zone 5 through refining zone 4 and neck 7. The molten glass is introduced between rodlike cooling members 9-12 alternately protruded from both side walls 8, 8' of kiln 1 in the lateral direction of kiln 1, and it is allowed to flow in a zigzag direction between members 11, 9 and between members 12, 10, whereby the molten glass is drawn in the lateral direction of kiln 1 and homogenized through the passage. The resulting homogeneous molten glass is then taken out of outlet 6.
