Abstract

PURPOSE:To well refine molten glass by setting a specified lower course melting portion in the progress direction of an upper course melting portion in which raw material is melted and vitrified and by supplying an electric current between platelike electrodes to prevent imperfectly molten glass from flowing out. CONSTITUTION:This electrically melting furnace for glass is composed of upper course melting portion 1 provided with platelike electrodes 7, 8 set opposite to each other along both side walls, lower course melting portion 2 horizontally connecting to portion 1 and provided with platelike electrodes 13, 14 along both side walls, and member 12 partitioning portions 1, 2. Glass raw material is charged into portion 1 from raw material feeder 4 through inlet 3 and melted by supplying a current between electrodes 7, 8 through molten glass. A hot spot is then formed in portion 2 by supplying a current between electrodes 13, 14 to well refine molten glass which flowed into the spot. The refined glass flows out of outlet 15.
