Abstract

PURPOSE: To thoroughly remelt raw material glass, even if mixed with glass of high melting temp., in a glass melting furnace by arranging groups of electric resistance heating elements at positions in the glass melting vessel of the furnace which positions are not dipped into molten glass and by making heating elements set at a raw material glass feed part detachable.
CONSTITUTION: A plurality of rodlike resistors 20 just under feed inlet 10 are drawn out, and a predetermined amt. of raw material glass is charged into melting vessel 5. Resistors 20 are then inserted, and all of electric resistance heating elements 17, 18 and electrodes 11, 12, 13, 14 are electrified. The raw material glass begins to melt with radiant heat of elements 17, showing electric conductivity, and the glass is thoroughly melted and mixed by electrodes 11W14. When the molten glass begins to show sufficient electric conductivity, resistors 20 just under inlet 10 are drawn out, raw material glass is continuously fed from inlet 10, and glass primary filament 23 is spun in succession.
