Abstract

PURPOSE:To feed highly defoamed and refined molten glass to a spinning section by arrnaging a melting section, a defoaming section and the spinning section in a line with each partition wall in-between while in communication with each other and by forming descending throats and weirs in the defoaming section. CONSTITUTION:Solid glass 35 fed to the melting section 2 of a remelting type platinum-base spinning furnace for manufacturing glass fibers is melted by resistance heating with an electric current supplied through a terminal 33. The molten glass enters the defoaming section 3 generating heat by resistance heating through the lower opening 8 of a partition wall plate 7, and in the section 3 the glass repeats descending and ascending through throats 22, 22' and weirs 23, 23'. During this time, the glass is defoamed and refined. This glass flows into the spinning section 4 from the opening 11 of partition wall plates 9, 10. In the section 4 the glass is controlled at a constant spinning temp. by resistance heating with an electric current supplied through a terminal 33, and it is spun through a tip nozzle 36. By this mechanism a high defoaming effect and high spinning efficiency are attained.
