Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the size of forming devices, to increase the efficiency and to facilitate the forming work by melting, homogenizing and refining glass in a vertical type electrically melting furnace and by directly feeding the molten glass to forming devices connected to the bottom openings of the furnace without passing through a riser and feeder. CONSTITUTION:A square type electrically melting furnace 1 is composed of an upper melting and convection zone 2 and a lower laminar flow refining zone 3. The cross-sectional area of the zone 3 is made to 0.3-0.9 time that of the zone 2 by means of a step 6. A layer 8 of a batch of glass is deposited on molten glass 7 in the furnace. The glass is successively melted with electrodes 4, and the molten glass is homogenized under circulating flows A and return flows B. The step 6 hinders polluted glass from flowing down. In the zone 3 the molten glass is further homogenized, refined, and provided with temp. and viscosity necessary for forming. This molten glass 7 is spun into glass fibers 15 with bushings 12 connected to the bottom wall 10 of the furnace.
