Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce the size of forming devices, to increase the efficiency and to facilitate the forming work by melting, homogenizing and refining glass in a vertical type electrically melting furnace, directly feeding the molten glass to forming devices connected to the bottom openings of the furnace, and forming it into products. CONSTITUTION:A square type electrically melting furnace 1 is composed of an upper melting and convection zone 4 for glass and a lower laminar flow refining zone 5. A layer 7 of a batch of glass is deposited on molted glass 6 in the furnace, and by successively melting the glass with main electrodes 12, violently circulating flows A are caused between the layer 7 and the molten glass 6 to accelerate homogeneous mixing. The unfinished glass shifts to the zone 5 in succession and reaches the bottom 3 of the furnace. During this time, the glass is homogenized, refined, and provided with temp. and viscosity necessary for forming. After correcting the temp. of the molten glass flowing into bushings 9 with auxiliary electrodes 13, flows B to be drawn are formed, and glass fibers 14 are spun. Thus, the glass products can be formed without passing through a riser and a feeder.
