Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the transparency and quality of glass by dividing a work coil for induction-heating glass in a container into a plurality of sections and by separately controlling the divided coils to divide molten glass into a higher temp. melting zone and a lower temp. refining zone in the flowing direction. CONSTITUTION:Starting material glass 9 is introduced into a melting chamber 4 from the charge inlet 3 in a stationary state, and high frequency voltages are separately applied to work coils 10A, 10B enclosing a melting container 2 from oscillators 11A, 11B. Glass is melted at a high temp. such as about 1,350- 1,500 deg.C in the chamber 4, and molten glass flowing into a refining chamber 6 through a throat 5 is refined by holding at a temp. below the temp. of the chamber 4.
