Abstract

PURPOSE: To make possible the formation of a uniform layer over the entire part of substrates and make characteristics uniform among the individual cells with respect to themselves by laminating an insulation layer, an electrode layer and the 2nd insulation layer on one or both of the substrates sandwiching a liquid crystal layer.
CONSTITUTION: The 1st insulation layer I1, an electrode layer E and the 2nd insulation layer I2 are laminated on one or both of substrates B sandwiching a liquid crystal layer. It is preferable to form the insulation layers I1, I2 by the coating layers of aliphatic ester of silicic acid. For example, the glass substrates B are immersed in the soln. prepared by adding ethanol and ethyl acetate as well as a small amount of hydrochloric acid and water to ethyl silicate and are pulled up from the soln, after which they are heat-treated at 300°C, whereby the insulation layer I1 is formed. The electrode layer E of In2O3 is formed thereon and further the 2nd insulation layer I2 is formed in the manner similar to that described above. Two sheets of the thus prepared substrates are opposed and a liquid crystal layer is sandwiched therebetween then their circumferential part is sealed, whereby the display element is made.
