Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable a continuous cast process to produce a free-cutting steel having no bubble defect by controlling the amount of C, O2 and Mn contained in a free cutting sulfur steel to a specified value so as to utilize the CO bubble-controlling effect by sulfur.
CONSTITUTION: In a steel containing C<0.20%, Mn; 0.30W2.0%, P<0.100%, S; 0.100W0.400%, and O2>80ppm, the contents % of S, C, and O2 in the steel are controlled so that the value of K in the formula K=%(S)/%(C)×%(O2) falls in the shadow area of the line connecting 6 and 11 in the figure. Sulfur is a surface active element and, when CO bubbles occur in molten steel, the sulfur gathers on its surface and prevents C and O2 to be diffused into the bubbles and thereby effectively suppressing the bubble growing. Also, controlled content of Mn prevents cracks and brittle property occurring in hot rolling due to reduced hot strength. The process thereby permits a continuous casting process to provide a cast piece of a free-cutting sulfur steel.
