Abstract
PURPOSE:To provide titled slag which decreases hollow defects and defects occuring in slag inclusion which are liable to occur with an ingot of an initial period of continuous casting by adding and compounding a specific ratio of MnO to and with slag of which the basicity is controlled to a prescribed range. CONSTITUTION:New artificial slag for initial period of continuous casting consisting of adding and compounding 1-6wt% MnO to and with slag of which the basicity (CaO/SiO2) is controlled to a 0.8-1.2 range. This artificial slag is initially charged at the start of continuous casting, and after 5-6min of use thereof, it is switched to artificial slag contg. no MnO, and the casting may be continued. As a result, the quality of the ingot in the initial period of the casting is improved up to a level approximately equal to the quality of the ingot in the stable period by the articial slag contg. no MnO. Hence, it is possible to eliminate completely the crop scraps for said part produced heretofore unavoidably owin to the physical factors in the initial period of casting.
