Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect the surface of snow securely by making a reflective surface of a substance that has higher reflectivity of an ultrasonic wave than that of snow and then by comparing a reflection level in snowfall to that of the reflective surface as a reference level. CONSTITUTION:Detection surface 3 is made of concret, asphalt, etc., high in ultrasonic reflection coefficient and its reflection level is adjusted by gain control part 35 with the output of detector 23 set to level A, thereby regarding level A as 100% reflectivity. Comparison reference setting part 26 generates the value of level AXalpha(alpha=0.8-0.7), which is input to one input terminal of comparator 24. When a snowfall is zero, comparator 24 receives a greater reflection input than level B and sends out to output 201 a signal changing from ''H'' to ''L'' and when snow falls, no greater signal than level B is input, so that output 201 will be at ''H'' at any time. Therefore, the output of comparator 24 is considered a reflection output to find the relation to a transmitted wave from head 21 to the reflective surface, so that the snowfall can securely be detected.
