Abstract

PURPOSE: To selectively separate and discharge exhaust gas of high unburned HC content and reduce the total quantity of discharged unburned HC, by providing an exhaust passage in a part of the valve stem and valve head of an exhaust valve to release exhaust gas as the degree of opening of the valve is low.
CONSTITUTION: An exhaust valve 1 is closed and the umbrella-shaped part 2a of a cover 2 is fitted at a prescribed depth in the cylindrical inside surface 10b of an exhaust valve seat 10 in the initial stage of exhaust stroke. When a valve head 1a starts going off a valve seat portion 10a in that state, exhaust gas containing a large amount of unburned HC flows into the small chamber 3c of an exhaust valve guide 3 through a space 4 between the exhaust valve 1 and the cover 2 and flows out of the small chamber 3c into an exhaust passage 8 because an exhaust port 9 remains closed by the umbrella-shaped part 2a. The unburned HC is then oxidized by a catalytic converter or the like. The oxidized substances are discharged. When the exhaust stroke progresses and the umbrella-shaped part 2a is separated from the seat 10, the exhaust port 9 is opened so that exhaust gas of low unburned HC content is discharged through the exhaust port 9.
