Abstract
PURPOSE: To remove uncombusted HC components in the exhaust system of engine effectively by way of oxidation, by forming in combustion chamber a first exhaust passage for discharging exhaust gas containing a relatively large amount of uncombusted HC components and a second exhaust passage for discharging exhaust gas containing a relatively small amount of uncombusted HC components.
CONSTITUTION: In combustion chamber 3, there are formed a main exhaust port 12 opened by main exhaust valve 11 and a subsidiary exhaust port 14 opened by subsidiary exhaust valve 13. The main exhaust port 12 is connected to outer exhaust passage 17, whereas subsidiary exhaust port 14 is connected to inner exhaust passage 16 which is disposed inside the outer exhaust passage 17 concentrically therewith. Here, arrangement is such that main exhaust valve 11 is opened at the initial stage of exhaust stroke for discharging exhaust gas in combustion chamber 3 containing a relatively small amount of uncombusted HC components, whereas subsidiary exhaust valve 13 is opened at the later stage of exhaust stroke for discharging exhaust gas containing a relatively large amount of HC components. Therefore, exhaust gas containing a relatively large amount of HC components is heated by outer exhaust passage 17, so that the HC components can be oxidized effectively.
