Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the gradation recording having the sufficient variation in its tone with high productibity by a method wherein 1 dot of a thermal head is divided into a plurality of picture elements and the number of picture elements to be heated is controlled in a thermal sensitive recording device. CONSTITUTION:1 Dot of a thermal head is divided into 16 picture elements, for example, and heating resistors R1-R16 for respective picture elements 1-16 are heated independently. When a pattern memory MP receives a gradation indicating signal CM that determines which heating resistors among R1-R16 should be driven, a selection signal SC is transmitted from the pattern memory MP to a latch circuit LAT. In this state, when a printing gate pulse PW is applied, gates G1-G16 are opened corresponding to the selection signal SC so that a current passes through the heating resistors connected to the opened gates, thus effecting the recording with desired gradation levels.
