Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound simply and economically, by reacting a primary alcohol with ammonia or a primary or secondary amine in the presence of a specific catalyst and a gas containing oxygen.
CONSTITUTION: A primary alcohol, e.g. a compound having 1W4 groups -CH2OH in the molecule, is reacted with ammonia or a primary or secondary amine, e.g. a compound having -NH2 and >NH, in the presence of a catalyst containing ruthenium and/or rhodium and gas containing oxygen at 0W200°C to give the titled compound, e.g. N-butylformamide. The gas containing the oxygen may be molecular oxygen, i.e. oxygen gas per se, or O2 diluted with another gas, e.g. N2, inert to the reaction.
EFFECT: The reaction proceeds fully even at a reflux temperature of methanol and has an oxidizing activity at about ordinary temperature.
