Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound industrially and advantageously, by the reaction of acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile with water in the presence of a Ti or Zr oxide, having a high activity, high selectivity, and long life and easily and safely preserved and handled as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An unsaturated amide is obtained by the reaction of acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile with water in the presence of a Ti or Zr oxide as a catalyst. The corresponding catalyst is prepared as follows: To a solution of the corresponding metallic salt (e.g. sulfate or nitrate), particularly its aqueous solution, is added a solution, particularly an aqueous solution, of ammonia or an alkaline hydroxide, etc. to precipitate the corresponding metallic hydroxide or a compound containing it. The resultant precipitate is then calcined. The above catalyst can be supported on a carrier, e.g. silica or alumina, to be used. The hydration reaction is carried out preferably at room temperature W300°C, preferably at 40W150°C to inhibit side reactions.
