Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound in high catalytic activity with improving the operation and efficiency of separating and purifying process, by reacting methanol with NH3 in the presence of mordenite type zeolite so that dimethylamine is selected specifically and the occurrence of impurities as by-products is reduced.
CONSTITUTION: Methanol is reacted with ammonia, to give methylamine. In the reaction, mordenite type zeolite is used as a catalyst. Mordenite having effective pore diameters of usually about 4W about 10Å, especially preferably about 5Å, is usable as the catalyst. Natural mordenite shown by the formula (x+y+z=1, x/z, y, and z are 0.1W0.6), synthetic modenite of small boat (an alkali metal ion of it is partially replaced by hydrogen ion or divalent-trivalent metal), etc. may be cited as the mordenite. The use of this catalyst improves the yield and reduces the amount of impurities under the same condition as that of a solid acid catalyst.
