Abstract
PURPOSE: To reduce the by-products substantially, and to improve the conversion and selectivity of the reaction and the life of a catalyst remarkably, in the gas- phase catalytic decomposition of 1,1-diarylethane in the presence of a catalyst, by carrying out the catalytic decomposition in hydrogen gas stream.
CONSTITUTION: Styrene or a nucleus-substituted styrene derivative of formula II or III (R1WR6 are H or methyl) is prepared by the gas-phase catalytic decomposition of 1,1-diarylethane of formula I in the presence of a solid acid catalyst (e.g. kaolinite, zeolite, etc.) at 300W700°C under hydrogen gas stream. The amount of hydrogen is 0.01W50mol/1mol of 1,1-diarylethane. Hydrogen may be diluted with other inert gas.
