Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare methacrylonitrile, easily and economically, by the catalytic gas phase reaction of tert-butanol with NH3 and O2, in the presence of a specific easily available metal oxide catalyst having excellent activity and selectivity.
CONSTITUTION: Methacrylonitrile is prepared by contacting tert-butanol, NH3 and O2 with oxides of metals comprising Mo (1 mole) and Bi (pref. 0.3W2 moles), at 300W600°C, pref. 350W500°C, for 0.2W20 seconds, pref. 1W10 seconds. The catalsyt can be prepared by dissolving or suspending Mo or its compound and Bi or its compound in a solvent, adding a carrier to the solution, etc. in option, drying the solution, calcining, forming, and finally calcining at 400W700°C.
