Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the title compounds, especially methacrylic acid, in high yield, by the vapor-phase catalytic oxidation of isobutyl aldehyde with molecular oxfygen or a gas containing molecular oxygen, in the presence of a highly active, highly selective, long-life catalyst having heteropolyacid structure.
CONSTITUTION: The title compound is prepared by oxidizing isobutyl aldehyde with molecular oxygen, etc., in the presence of a catalyst composed of a heteropolyacid of formula (X is As, Th, Al, Fe, etc.; Y is K, Rb, etc.; when a=10, then 0< b≤6, 0.5≤c≤6, 0<d, e≤3, 0≤f≤1.5 and g is defined by the values of aWf) or a mixture of the acid and its salt. The catalyst can be prepared by dissolving or slurrifying a compound of the constituent element in a solvent, evaporating the solution, etc. to dryness, and if necessary, calcining the dried product. It is preferably supported with a carrier to improve the heat resistance, life, and yield.
