CONSTITUTION:Before the start of a read, the quantity of light of fluorescent lamps R1 and R2 reflected at a white part on original OR is obtained by CCD and stored in storage M via gain variable amplifier AMP and A/D converter AD. The gain of AMP at this time is fixed to a prescribed value and then switch SW is closed to negatively feed back the output of storage M to AMP via D/A converter DA and LPF, to control the gain. The amplification factor is increased corresponding to the left and right ends of lamps R1 and R2 where the quantity of light is small and increased corresponding to the center where the quantity of light is large to compensate change of the readout signal uniformly. Thus, disadvantages of a mechanical shading correcting method are eliminated and fluctuations of the quantity of light due to fluctuations of temperature are also compensated.
