Abstract

PURPOSE:To lower the pumping loss caused in drawing intake air, by providing a suction valve interconnected to the cam shaft and another suction valve the operation of which is controlled in response to the load, and controlling one of the above two suction valves such that it is closed earlier when the load is high and closed later when the load is low. CONSTITUTION:Carburetor 16 and expansion chamber 18 are disposed in intake passage 8, and the first and the second suction valves 20, 22 for opening and closing the intake passage 8 are disposed in face of combustion chamber 2. The first suction valve 20 is opened and closed by the first valve driving means 26 including cam shaft 28 interconnected to the crank shaft and rocker arm 34 driven by the cam 30. The second suction valve 22, on the other hand, is opened and closed by the second valve driving means 36 in response to the engine load. The second valve driving means 36 is constituted by an accelerator detecting means 40 for detecting the amount of depression of accelerator pedal 38, a control means 44 for producing an intermittent signal by the aid of rotation detecting means 43 for producing signals in synchronism with cam shaft 28 and the output of said means 40, and solenoid 46.
