Abstract

PURPOSE:To minimize the shorts of positive and negative electrodes, and lengthen the charge and discharge cycle life of a lead acid battery by providing a layer, which is made of a mixture of colloidal sulfuric acid and a compound the water absorbing power of which depends upon PH, within an electrolyte above the top of the plates of the battery. CONSTITUTION:An assembled element consisting of negative plates 2, positive plates 3, and framelike separators 5 with projections 4 is inserted into a container 1, before colloidal sulfuric acid electrolyte 6 is poured in the container 1. An electrolyte 7, which is above the top of the plates and in which bubbles tend to remain, is added with a water absorbing compound which has high water absorbing power when the PH of the electrolyte is around 7 and shows hardly any water absorbing capacity when the PH becomes near 1. The former water absorbing compound is, for example, a starch prepared by subjecting either an acrylic acid system monomer or a methacrylic acid system monomer to graft copolymerization.
