Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the efficiency of the formation of a plate packed with an active material, and enable the electric current used for the formation to be saved by providing minium layers over the surface of the plate except the grid bone of the plate. CONSTITUTION:A paste 2 prepared by mixing and kneading a lead oxide and a dilute sulfuric acid, is packed in a grid base plate 1 made of either lead or a lead alloy. Minium layers 3 are attached to the surface of the paste 2 except the grid bone of the plate 1, and the whole constitutes a positive plate 4 which has not undergone any formation. Owing to the above constitution, when the former positive plate 4 undergoes formation by means of a dilute sulfuric acid having a high specific gravity (1.18-1.22), the minium layers 3 which are provided on the surface of the plate 4 and are immersed in the electrolyte react with sulfuric acid, thereby lead dioxide with high conductivity being produced. Consequently, the efficiency of the formation of the plate 4 is enhanced owing to the lead dioxide produced.
