CONSTITUTION:Polar high-molecular substance 5 such as epoxy resin, acrylic resin or polyimide resin is mixed with slender molecules 4 of a dichromatic dye such as Congo red or triphenylmethane having high electric dipole efficiency in the molecules, strong absorption over a wide wavelength range and absorption axes parallel to the line of longitudinal axis. Directly rubbed surfaces 2 of glass substrates 1, 1 or the rubbed or diagonally vapor-deposited surfaces of inorg. or org. insulating films on substrates 1, 1 are coated with films of the mixture and dried to form polarizing and orientation controlling films. An electric field may be applied to dye molecules 4 and resin 5 at a molten state to produce electret after cooling. Thus, molecules 4 are prevented from being eluted and recrystallized, and a display device with superior dielectric strength, moisture resistance, etc. is obtd.
