PURPOSE:To provide a hydraulic damper, which is capable of increasing the hydraulic damping force according to the stroke of a work piston at the time of compression stroke and also capable of making an effective use of the entire allowable stroke of the work piston. CONSTITUTION:This hydraulic damper comprises a main cylinder 10 and a subsidiary cylinder 20 coupled together by a connecting hoes 15, and a work piston 30 is fitted in the main cylinder 10 in a freely slidable manner. The work piston 30 includes a coupling member 34 for conncting the piston body 31 to the top of a piston rod 60, and a damping force controlling mechanism 39 is provided in the coupling member 34. Further, in the main cylinder 10, a fixed valve 50 is disposed between a cylinder case 11 and an end case 13. Here, the fixed valve 50 includes a hollow rod 55 extending through the inside of the piston rod 60, and a needle 65 fixed to the piston rod 60 is inserted into the hollow rod 55 for forming a variable orifice between them.
