PURPOSE:To give initial commutation capability without employing a separate power source for charging a commutation capacitor in advance of the starting, by providing current-limiting impedances and thyristers to be connected in series to these impedances. CONSTITUTION:Current-limiting impedances 91 and 93 and thyristers 92 and 94 to be connected in series to these impedances are provided. By operating a converter circuit 2 simultaneously with starting of a current-type inverter, commutation capacitors 61-66 are charged. When changing of the commutation capacitors 61- 66 is completed, an inverter circuit 4 is started, and at first, thyristers 41 and 42 are turned on to pass starting current to an AC motor 7, and then, a thyrister of the inverter 4 is turned on in the prescribed order. In this case, since the commutation capacitors 61-66 are given in advance such a commutation capability as to be able to start under a heavy load even after commutation of the thyrister of the inverter circuit 4, commutation failure never occurs.
