Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a β-blocker in a short step without using a carcinogenic substance, by reacting a diol derivative with HBr and a lower fatty acid, and reacting the resultant bromohydrin derivative with an amine.
CONSTITUTION: A racemate or an optical active diol derivative of formula II (Ar is aromatic group) is reacted with HBr and a lower fatty acid to give a racemate or optically active bromohydrin derivative of formula III (R is lower alkyl). Acetic acid which is inexpensive and readily available is prefered as the lower fatty acid and may be used as a reactant and solvent. The compound of formula III is then reacted with an amine of formula IV (R' is optionally substituted alkyl) to give an aminoalcohol derivative which is a racemate or optically active substance of formula I. The reaction is carried out in a solvent., e.g. THF, at 35W80°C.
