Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for a variety of polymers, agricultural chemicals, medicines, etc., economically and in high yield, by the chlorination of the side chains of xylene in the first stage, to prepare a mixture of chlorinated xylenes having 2W4 Cl atoms, and by its reaction with nitric acid in the second stage.
CONSTITUTION: Chlorine in an amount of 2W4mol is reacted with one mole of xylene, to prepare a chlorinated xylene mixture having 2W4, preferably 2.5W3.5, chlorine atoms, on an average, per one xylene molecule in its side chains, and the resulting mixture is reacted with nitric acid in an amount of 0.2W20mol, especially 1.5W10mol based on the chlorinated xylene mixture, to obtain an aromatic dialdehyde.
