Abstract

PURPOSE: An easily thermoformable neutron shielding material with excellent neutron shielding effect, emitting no γ-ray on absorbing neutron, which is prepared by compounding a relatively large amt. of inorg. boron compd. with a polyethylene resin.
CONSTITUTION: A composition prepared by compounding 350W750pts.wt. inorg. boron compd. (e.g., boron nitride of true density about 1.88W2.27g/cm3, wt.- average particle size about 0.7W6μ and surface area about 14W35m2/g) with 100pts.wt. high-density polyethylene of MW ≥ about 30,000. In the preparation of said composition, it is preferable to obtain said composition composed of the above components in a final proportion, by feeding a part of the inorg. boron compd. into Brabender or a kneader, in which it is molten and kneaded at a temp. ≥ m.p. thereof, and then gradually feeding and kneading the balance of the inorg. boron compd.
