Abstract
PURPOSE: The titled composition, prepared by incorporating an inorganic boron compound and zinc sulfide fluorescent substance with polyethylene resin, useful as a radiation shielding material having improved sensing property of radiation, and effective for shielding the radiation without emitting secondary radiation.
CONSTITUTION: A composition prepared by kneading 100pts.wt. high-density polyethylene resin having a molecular weight ≥30,000, particularly ≥50,000, with 200W400pts.wt., preferably 200W350pts.wt., inorganic boron compound, preferably a powdery compound containing no metal, having a weight- average particle diameter of 0.5W500μ, most preferably boron nitride having a true density of 1.88W 2.27g/cm3, a weight-average particle diameter of 0.7W6.0μ and a surface area of 14W35m2/g, and containing a large amount of B10 with a large neutron absorption cross sectional area and 100W400pts.wt., preferably 100W350pts.wt., zinc sulfide fluorescent substance, preferably a powdery silvered zinc sulfide having an average particle diameter of 1.0W50μ. Preferably, the boron compound and the fluorescent substance are partly melt kneaded while adding the rest thereto.
