Abstract

PURPOSE: A protecting fiber, useful as a medical assistant material, having a specific cross-sectional area of each fiber and a neutron shielding ability, and consisting of a fiber-forming organic polymer containing a specific amount of a finely divided inorganic lithium compound and/or inorganic boron compound.
CONSTITUTION: At least about 1wt% finely divided inorganic lithium compound, e.g. lithium fluoride, or inorganic boron compound, e.g. boron carbide, or both are mixed with a fiber-forming organic polymer, e.g. high-density polyethylene powder, in a blender wigh agitation, and the resultant powder mixture is then melt kneaded in a single screw extruder, etc. to give a chip. The chip thus obtained is melt spun into a fiber, which is then drawn to give the aimed fiber having a cross- sectional area ≤ about 2.0×10-3cm2 per fiber. Preferably, the maximum particle size of the fine powder is 50μ or less, and the particles are uniformly dispersed and mixed along the long direction of the fiber.
