Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled substance containing much threo isomer in high yield, by reacting glycine with acetaldehyde in the presence of one or more of manganese, iron, etc. and a microorganism belonging to the genus Arthrobacter.
CONSTITUTION: Glycine is reacted with acetaldehyde in the presence of a microorganism, e.g. DK-1,084 strain or DK-1,365 strain, belonging to the genus Arthrobacter or the microorganism immersed in a metallic chelating agent such as any of live or dried microbial cells or an extract thereof, and one or more ions of manganese, iron, magnesium and cobalt, further a surfactant and a reducing agent in the reaction system at a pH of about 7W8. After the reaction is completed, the microbial cells are removed by the conventional method, and adsorption and desorption are carried out to isolate and purify L-threonine.
