Abstract

PURPOSE: To simplify and rationalize the separation and refinement of iodine in the subsequent process while saving chemical and energy costs elution of iodine from a strong basic anion exchange resin with iodine adsorbed employing sulfurous acid.
CONSTITUTION: A molecular iodine is eluted by a solution containing sulfurous acid from an iodine-adsorbed resin in which strong anion exchange resin adsorbs iodine from a brine containing iodine. In addition, ionic iodine is eluted using a by-product sulfuric acid. Aus acid anhydride is introduced into a solution after iodine ion is eluted with a sulfuric acid by this method to dissolve a molecular iodine from the afore-mentioned iodine adsorbed resin with the sulfurous acid contact of about 0.5 to 6.0% by weight in terms of SO2. With such an arrangement, the elution (formula I) of the molecular iodine with sulfurous acid proceeds at a normal temperature. No huminic organic substance if adsorbed wot's be eluted. The by-product sulfuric acid is applicable to the elution formula X of iodine ion.
