Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent deposited metal from having hot cracking in multilayer welding wherein the depth of penetration of a root part is secured by an angular joint or T joint of a thick plate and extremely thick plate, by forming a groove with a shoulder in an edge surface and by welding the shoulder part.
CONSTITUTION: When horizontal steel material 2 is welded to vertical steel material 1, groove A having shoulder S in its edge surface is engraved on horizontal steel material 2. In the welding of an initial layer 3', the welding work spreading over a part of shoulder S is performed and the width of a weld bead is increased to change the growing directions of dendrite crystal grain 5'. Through the slit effect of groove A, restraint stress applied to deposited metal in the width wise direction is relieved to prevent the deposited metal from generating heat-affected zone cracking. In addition, deep penetration can be obtained at the root parts of horizontal steel material 2 placed nearly at right angle to vertical steel material 1.
