Abstract

PURPOSE: To control the chemical components of the weld metal of weld zone and obtain the weld zone of superior characteristics by beforehand grooving the faying surface of a metal plate, superposing a dissimilar metal plate thereon and irradiating a beam of high energy density.
CONSTITUTION: In lap welding of dissimilar metal plates, a groove 5 is beforehand worked on the faying surfafe of an under metal layer 3 of stainless steel, etc. along the weld line 4. An intermediate metal plate 2 of a titanium sheet, etc. and an upper metal plate 1 of stainless steel or the like as dummy are superposed thereon and are restrained, then a heat source 6 of electron beam or laser beam of high energy density is irradiated and is manipulated along the weld line 4. As a result of this, the molten metal of the metal plates 1, 2 is dropped into the groove 5 to melt the parts of the metal plate 3 forming the groove 5, whereby the weld zone 7 of three kinds of intermetallic compounds is formed. If at this time the shape of the groove 5 is suitably controlled, the weld zone having superior characteristics may be obtained.
