Abstract
PURPOSE: To raise the sea water resistance and free-cutting property of a chromium- containing cast iron obtained by adding spherical graphite and deformed graphite to a cast iron whose C, Si, Mn, Cr, and Ti contents are designated.
CONSTITUTION: The free-cutting chromium-containing cast iron contains 2.8W 4.0wt% C, 2.5W4.5wt% Si, 0.1W1.0wt% Mn, 0.7W3.0wt% Cr, and 0.03W1.0wt% Ti, besides Fe and inevitable impurities. In the cast iron, the inclusion of Ti serves to suppress the formation of Cr carbide and white pig iron, small spherical graphite separates out almost uniformly in portions where cooling rate during the coagulation is fast, and deformed graphite of the same size as that of the spherical graphite and also of an adequately deformed shape is formed in portions where cooling rate is slow. Thus, the hardness of the cast iron can be lowered adequately, and the free cutting property and toughness of the cast iron can be secured and improved.
