Abstract
PURPOSE: To reduce the amount of steam, specify the concentration of fine solid particles in the inlet gas of a reactor in the former stage and prolong the life of a catalyst, by circulating part of the outlet gas of a reactor as a diluent in obtaining methacrylic acid through the catalytic vapor phase oxidation of isobutylene, etc. in two stages.
CONSTITUTION: Isobutylene or a hydrocarbon mixture consisting of the isobutylene essentially or t-butyl alcohol is oxidized in the vapor phase catalytically in two stages to prepare methacrylic acid. After the reaction, the outlet gas from a reaction in the latter stage is fed into a condensing apparatus to collect condensible components, e.g. methacrylic acid or water. The remaining waste gas is partly circulated through the oxidation reactor in the former stage instead of steam. The concentration of fine solid particles in the inlet gas of the reactor is adjusted to 0.5g/Nm3 or below, preferably 0.1g/Nm3 or below. The volume of the gas to be circulted for use is usually 5W90% based on the outlet gas. The concentration of the fine solid particles, e.g. methacrylic acid, adjusted to the value described above prevents the adsorption of the fine particles to the surface of the catalyst.
