Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound continuously, by the nucleus-chlorination of an alkylbenzene in the presence of a catalyst composed of a Lewis acid and a phenoxathine compound while activating the catalyst by introducing hydrogen halide into the residue containing the catalyst at an arbitrary stage of the reaction.
CONSTITUTION: The nucleus-chlorination of an alkylbenzene is carried out continuously by (1) chlorinating the nucleus of the alkylbenzene in the presence of a catalyst composed of a Lewis acid and a phenoxathine compound of formula (X1WX4 are H, electron-attractive group, or electron-donative group) (e.g. 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorophenoxathine), (2) separating the alkylbenzene nucleus-substituted at the p-position, and (3) adding stock alkylbenzene to the residue containing the catalyst. In an arbitrary step in the above process, a hydrogen halide (e.g. HF, HCl, HBr, etc.) is introduced into the residue containing the catalyst pref. at a rate of 20W 1,000ml/min. for 10minW24hr to activate the catalyst.
