Abstract
PURPOSE: To carry out the nuclear chlorination of toluene, by using a phenoxathiin, a chlorinated phenoxathiin compound or a mixture thereof capable of giving a very high selectivity for the p-position as a co-catalyst in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Toluene is subjected to the nuclear chlorination in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst to give a nuclear chlorinated toluene. In the process, one or more selected from phenoxathiin compound, e.g. 3,9-dimethyl-6,8-dichlorophenoxathiin of the formula (X is H or Cl; R is methyl at the 1 and/or 3-position; m is an integer 1W2) or a chlorinated phenoxathiin compound obtained by the high chlorination thereof or a mixture thereof are used as a co-catalyst at a weight ratio between the co-catalyst and the main catalyst of (0.2:1)W(5:1). The reaction is preferably carried out at 0W40°C due to the high selectivity for the p- position of the co-catalyst at a low temperature.
