Abstract

PURPOSE:To raise the stability of combustion and reduce fuel consumption, by providing a variable-valve-timing engine with a means for increasing initial combustion energy. CONSTITUTION:A valve moving mechanism is provided. This mechanism comprises a cam shaft 3 which is displaced in the axial direction in connection with a hydraulic cylinder 8, and a tridimensional cam 5 whose profile changes with the axial displacement of the cam shaft 3. The closing time of an intake valve 4 is controlled by the valve moving mechanism so that the closing time is changed depending on the state of running. The quantity of sucked air in thus increased depending on a load to reduce fuel consumption. An initial energy increasing means is provided in an engine to augment the initial ratio of fuel just after ignition and stabilize combustion as a whole. A thick mixture feed accessory combustion chamber 46, s spark plug covered with a plug cam, a plurality of simultaneous ignition spark plugs or the like is used as the initial energy increasing means. This results in raising the stability of the combustion and reducing the fuel consumption.
