Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce the amount of noxious uncombusted substances contained in the exhaust gas of an engine using a fuel having a low cetane number, by providing an igniting-fuel injection nozzle and an output controlling, main-fuel injection nozzle in a subsidiary combustion chamber, and injecting the main fuel after raising fuel pressure by injecting the igniting fuel during combustion stroke of engine. CONSTITUTION:Igniting fuel L of gas oil is at first ignited in subsidiary combustion chamber 5, and then main fuel E of ethanol is injected into the atmosphere capable of igniting main fuel E, in a direction F toward the center of connecting passage 6. With such an arrangement, main fuel E is combusted satisfactorily in main combustion chamber 4, so that the amount of uncombusted substances contained in the exhaust gas can be reduced without increasing the amount of NOx. Further, combustion noises produced when main fuel E having a low cetane number is combusted can be eliminated by adjusting the injection timing for igniting fuel L of gas oil. By thus using fuel having a low cetane number as main fuel, it is enabled to increase output of engine and to reduce the amount of NOx and uncombusted substances contained in the exhaust gas.
