Abstract

Fuel is delivered by one or more carburetors 3 or fuel injectors to a main passage 11 to which an auxiliary passage 16 opens at one end adjacent to the intake port of a combustion chamber 7, a control valve 15 in the main intake passage 11 being closed under light loads so that the charge is introduced at high speed through the auxiliary passage 16 into the combustion chamber 7, control means for changing the timing at which peak pressure is produced in the combustion chamber 7, by recirculating exhaust combustion gas through a bleed pipe 21 under the control of a valve 23 and/or by retarding the ignition timing, and means 25 which ensures that the control means is actuated under light loads, but not at idling, so as to retard the timing at which the peak pressure is produced. <IMAGE>
