Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound (especially a 1,3-dimethyl substituted compound useful an an intermediate for a herbicide) from a low-priced raw material in relatively short time in high yield, by reacting 3-substituted-5-pyrazolone with a chlorinated alkyl in a solvent, e.g., DMF, etc.
CONSTITUTION: A compound shown by the formula I (R is alkyl) is reacted with a chlorinated alkyl shown by the formula R'Cl (R' is lower alkyl) in a solvent, e.g., DMF, etc. to give the desired compound (especially 1,3-dimethyl-5-pyrazolone) shown by the formula II.
