Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a chitosan membrane with appropriate membrane strength, high water permeability and solute permeability suitable for a ultrafilter membrance or a dialysis membrane by a method wherein a membrane is obtained from an acidic aqueous solution containing chitosan and polyethylene glycol is treated by alkali and thereafter washed with water. CONSTITUTION:A membrane is prepared from an acidic aqueous solution containing chitosan and polyethylene glycol, which is then treated by alkali and washed with water to remove polyethylene glycol. An applied chitosan is obtained by deachetylation of chitin which is a main component of crab or shrimp shell and a chitosan with average deacetylation degree of above about 90% is preferably used. As an acid, an organic acid is preferably used in order to reduce the deterioration of chitosan, and formic acid or acetic acid are preferably used from an economical standpoint. A polyethylene glycol of which an average M.W. is below 4000, preferably 400-2000, is used.
