Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain glycyrrhizin which is a component of licorice, easily in high purity, by treating the extract of licorice with an ultrafiltration membrane.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of licorice extract containing glycyrrhizin is first filtered with an ultrafiltration membrane having a fractionation molecular weight of 5,000W20,000, at pH4.5W7.0, to concentrate the glycyrrhizin as nontransmitting component, and then filtered with another ultrafiltration membrane having a fractionation molecular weight of 20,000W100,000 to concentrate the glycyrrhizin as transmitting component. Glycyrrhizin which is a low molecular compound having a molecular weight of 822.92 as glycyrrhizinic acid, is difficult to be filtered under an acidic condition, because of the interaction with other polymeric compounds originated from living body. Under an alkaline condition, the interaction can readily be broken, and the glycyrrhizin can be filtered easily.
