Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture an Al cast alloy contg. graphite uniformly dispersed as a solid lubricant by adding graphite particles to molten Al contg. a specified amt. of P or a molten Al alloy while agitating followed by press casting.
CONSTITUTION: 3.5wt% or less of P is added to Al or an Al alloy and melted by heating. This molten Al or Al alloy is held at a temp. 30°C or more above the liquidus line W900°C and agitated manually or mechanically. 4W30wt% of graphite of more than 50μm diameter is then added to the molten Al to disperse the graphite particles. The molten Al contg. the particles dispersed is poured into a sand mold or a metal mold and immediately press cast by applying a press. of 400W1000kg/ cm2 with a plunger from the top of the mold to uniformly disperse the graphite particles in the whole ingot. The resulting cast alloy is suitable for use as a material for sliding contact constituting elements of an internal combustion engine, e.g. a bearing, a gear, a piston and a cylinder.
