Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable narrow groove welding in corner parts, save power in edge preparation and welding, and increase the product precision, by disposing parallel the joining faces of members to form a groove, and applying a backing strip which is simultaneously used as spacer.
CONSTITUTION: A flange member 2 and a web member 1 are disposed with a certain clearance preserved so that the respective welding faces may oppose parallel to each other to form a groove 7. A backing strip 5 is squarely fitted to the groove 7, and a spacer/backing strip 8 is inserted in the groove 7 in the part requiring partial penetration, thus performing narrow groove welding. In this method, fully automatic welding may be applied in the corner part, and a preferable structural strength may be obtained when applied to welding of steel frames in high-rise buildings or the like.
