Abstract

PURPOSE: To join cation exchange membranes at a strength enough to withstand industrial use, by treating cation exchange membranes having -COOH radical at least on one side with tertiary amine or quarternary ammonium salt radical, and then heat-bonding.
CONSTITUTION: By treating cation exchange membranes having -COOH radical at least on one side with tertiary amine or quartenary ammonium salt radical and then heat-bonding, a junction membrane having a sufficient junction strength to withstand industrial applications is obtained. This method is effective when forming cation exchange membranes into desired shape, and the thickness of carboxylic acid layer should be about 1μ or more, preferably about 10μ or more. The carboxylic acid radical should be -COOH type, and membranes will not join if it is of -COOA type (A is an alkali metal).
