Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce the InSb thin strip which has strict stoichiometric composition and is effective for infrared photoconductive cells, Hall elements, etc. with good productivity by letting molten InSb spout from a nozzle onto the cooling body surface moving at the specified relative speed.
CONSTITUTION: Base material of molten InSb is charged into a melting furnace 2 and a cell 1 is deaerated. After the deaeration, the cell inside is held intact or substituted by inert gas such as Ar. The base material for molten InSb is then melted by supplying current to a coil 24. After this, the Ar or the like is applied under specified pressure from exhaust port 26 to let the molten liquid spout from a nozzle 21 to the outside circumferential part of a rotating cooling roll 41 which is moving at 1cm/sec or more, preferably about 1W104/sec with respect to the nozzle. The molten InSb is cooled by the outside circumferential surface of the roll 41 to become a thin strip which is then moved in the arrow b direction on a guide band 13 by centrifugal force and is captured within a capturing part 12.
